About the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association

First formed in 1902 and then affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) in 1932, the HPFFA is the fourth-largest fire union in the nation and is the sole bargaining agent for Houston firefighters. Along with the IAFF, the association has fought for and won nearly all of the improvements in wages, benefits and workplace conditions earned by Houston firefighters. Based in more than 100 fire department facilities around 600 square miles of the city, Houston firefighters serve a city with a population of 2.2 million citizens and more than seven million visitors each year. In 2015, Houston firefighters made 332,963 fire and emergency medical services (EMS) runs.
